Teacher Preparation Does Not Address Critical Learning and Instruction

Subject-Matter Objective : Recognizing that teacher preparation programs do not include critical learning, and that critical instruction is important because it shows that the profession has yet to establish a foundation for such learning and instruction.

Critical learning and critical instruction are similar. They both aim to achieve critical comprehension of content. They both use explicit critical thinking, reading, and writing processes. Critical learning is the basis for critical instruction. However, neither is present in current practice.

Deep-rooted serialism-based instruction inherently thwarts the best efforts of teacher educators, teacher candidates, and teachers. This is because the profession lacks a foundation in critical thinking, learning, and instruction. The result is weak instructional preparation and practice.

To introduce the need for foundational training, we start by exploring the preparation of doctors, engineers, and lawyers.
